The Anglican Diocese of Melbourne provides a program of professional training and development for all its newly ordained ministers that takes place across a cyclical three-year curriculum for the three years immediately after ordination. Between 50 and 60 newly ordained ministers take part in this training each year.
We especially wanted to provide our new ministers with training in emotional intelligence, to equip them for a demanding, person orientated role, that requires excellent interpersonal skills, together with high levels of empathy and the ability to listen well. We had noticed for some time that our newly ordained ministers were sometimes lacking in understanding how others perceived them, and sometimes less than proficient in their interpersonal skills, as they do not typically did not receive training in these matters in the context of the formal academic course of study each are required to undertake prior to ordination.
To meet this gap, we engaged Kathleen Gaynor in 2021. Kathleen was recommended to us by our internal Human Resources Manager who had worked with Kathleen and OD Consulting previously. The program Kathleen provided was specifically tailored to meet our needs, and was a major focus for us in 2021, occupying two of our five all day teaching opportunities that year, supplemented by an inventory, one on one debrief, and two group coaching sessions. This was a significant investment in time and other resources for the Diocese, and into the formation and training of our early years ministers.
Kathleen was exceptionally easy to work with, and most impressively, sought to understand the unique culture and environment, and working context, of the Anglican Church. The program was professionally delivered at each level, despite the many complications of the pandemic and lockdowns that occurred. Most pleasing, it received excellent feedback from the participants, in my estimation after seven years in this role the best feedback we have received for any program we have run. Kathleen did all the work on preparing the materials, delivering the training, and engaged one on one with the participants, many of whom had questions, scheduling problems or other issues, as they arose. All of this was done with good humour and professionally, taking an enormous amount of pressure off me and my team.
We intend to repeat this program as part of our three year curriculum, and will certainly be inviting Kathleen to deliver it for us again.
